Kevin Estrada describes his style as “edgy, in your face and a bit unorthodox.” He started shooting rock bands when he was thirteen, and he credits having to fight off the crowds to get his shots for the energy found in his work. Estrada’s has shot everyone from Motley Crue to Depeche Mode to Morrissey and Tom Petty. Having had the exclusive access to the Rick Rubin/Johnny Cash sessions was one of the highlights of Estrada’s career. “Working with Johnny Cash was the most memorable experience for me. He was everything I had hoped he would be…a true legend and a kind, loving soul.” Besides his work with Cash, Estrada is well-known for his timeless and original shots of Kurt Cobain. “My favorite shot in the exhibit is Kurt Cobain as Jesus—it is the most important frame of film that I have ever shot.”
“This is a project of passion” explains Bobby Carlton. “Growing up I used to squat in shooting galleries on New York’s lower eastside. I’d get high, hang-out and the gallery owners would let me in—it didn’t take long for me to become inspired by the art.” Having spent his career as a self-proclaimed “music business creep” working with such bands as Bush, The Circle Jerks, BuckCherry, Placebo, Tommy Lee, Ugly Kid Joe and Orgy. Carlton has long wanted to take his love for music to a new level. “I love everything about rock ‘n’ roll—the way it sounds, the way it looks and the way it allows you to escape. Putting it in a gallery setting makes so much sense to me. It’s truly a beautiful thing.”
If it goes according to Carlton’s plan, The Shooting Gallery will be a cool place to congregate….open, friendly and it will have a little mixture of avante garde coming face to face with rock ‘n’ roll. Besides photographic exhibits, Carlton plans on adding fine art shows from other musicians, as well as poetry readings. “I want this place to have a heart and soul,” exclaims Carlton. “We will have new shows and exhibits about every six to eight weeks. Besides having the chance to see some of these amazing photos, you will actually be able to purchase them. “ |
